The power of painting on a found surface is not a lonely act, the material has its own story already, its own age, history, smell, identity, journey, and most importantly, energy. My process is grounded when using material that has already reached its “fulfilled purpose." These paintings painted on linen backed antique wall maps are full of truth and time. Allowing my gestures and mark-making translate like the art of a map does through line and shape, these pieces mindfully reflect the the body, language and environment through time. Specifically, I choose to paint on the back of the maps leaving their natural coloration and purpose alive.
